Overview
This course is designed to provide knowledge of technical microcomputer architecture and operations and teach basic troubleshooting skills and procedures. It encourages effective use of available reference sources for problem diagnosis and resolution, enables clear and professional communication and prepares A+ Certification candidates for the Computing Technology Industry Association’s (CompTIA’s) certification exams.

Prerequisites
High School Diploma or equivalent required and 3 months computer experience desired

Related Exam
A+ Certification, the baseline performance credential for microcomputer technicians, one exam covering core hardware technician and one exam covering operating systems

Outline

This course covers the following topics:

  • Basic principles of computing, including an overview of computers.

  • Computer hardware, including cases and power supplies, system boards, CMOS and BIOS, CPUs, and memory.

  • Computer storage media, including principles of magnetic storage, floppy drives, hard drives, the IDE and SCSI interfaces, optical storage devices, and high capacity removable storage devices.

  • Peripherals, including sound, monitors and video hardware, modems, printers, input devices, and digital cameras and personal digital assistants.

  • Portable computing

  • Operating systems, including memory architecture, DOS, FDISK.EXE, Windows 9X, Windows NT, managing files and disks, and building or upgrading a computer.

  • Building or upgrading a computer.

  • Networks, including numbering systems, networking basics, networking hardware, networking protocols, and network operating systems.
