Overview
This class is designed to introduce the student to the features and functions of networking components and ensure that the student possesses the knowledge and skills needed to install, configure and troubleshoot basic networking hardware, protocols and services.  The exam tests technical ability in the areas of media and topologies, protocols and standards, network implementation, and network support.  The exam also covers new technologies such as wireless networking and gigabit Ethernet.

Outline
This course covers the following topics:

  • Basic Principles, including transmission modes, the concept of networking, and transmission types.

  • Network Connectivity Components, including cable types, wireless networking, and the network interface card.

  • How networks function, including the OSI Reference Model, the IEEE 802 Working Group, the role of drivers, packets and protocol data units, a general look at protocols in networking, and media access methods.

  • Network architecture, including Ethernet, Token Ring, AppleTalk and ArcNet architectures.

  • TCP/IP, including the architecture of the suite, the protocols included in the suite, IP addressing, TCP/IP services, and testing the TCP/IP installation.

  • Other network protocols, including IPX/SPX, NetBEUI and AppleTalk

  • Local Area Networks, including implementing LAN protocols and Virtual LANs.

  • Larger networks, including remote networking, hardware devices used to create larger networks, wide area networks, routing, and routing protocols.

  • Network operating systems

  • Network security, including ensuring network data security, avoiding data loss, and firewalls and proxies.

  • Solving network problems, including network monitoring, and network troubleshooting
